An Australian soldier and her husband have been arrested for allegedly spying for Russia. Both are citizens of Australia originally from Russia.
Authorities accuse the soldier, a 40-year-old army private, of sharing Australian Defence Force (ADF) information with Moscow.
They claim she traveled to Russia secretly during her military leave and instructed her husband, aged 62, on how to access her work account and transmit classified material.
This case marks the first use of Australia’s stringent foreign interference laws, introduced ten years ago, to charge individuals with espionage.
Despite the charges, Australian intelligence officials have stated that no significant breach of national secrets has been identified so far.
The couple is scheduled to appear in court in Brisbane to face charges of preparing for an espionage offense.
