Step Back in Time with 1,300-Year-Old Cookies Unearthed from Ancient Tomb”

Embark on a culinary journey with a recently revived ancient recipe for jam tartlet cookies dating back to a tomb in Xinjiang,

China. Discovered by British-Hungarian archaeologist Marc Aurel Stein in 1915, these delightful treats have been resurrected by Nadeem Ahmad of Eran ud Turan.

Inspired by the historical account and armed with basic ingredients like butter, sugar, eggs, flour, purple grapes, and apricot jam, Ahmad recreated the age-old dessert.

To make these treats, simply cream butter and sugar, blend in an egg, and gradually add flour. After a brief chill in the fridge, divide the dough into 24 pieces, form balls, and create a distinct asterisk pattern with a fork.

Add a unique twist by placing apricot jam-covered grapes in the center of each cookie before baking at 350°F until golden brown.

Despite their simple composition, these cookies proved to be a delightful surprise, offering a crispy exterior, caramelized bottom from the apricot jam, and a soft, juicy grape center.

Ideal for gatherings, Ahmad’s recipe promises a quick and easy batch of two dozen cookies. Don’t be deterred by crumbly dough; a sprinkle of water can work wonders.

Feel free to experiment with jam varieties, and credit to Parade for this fascinating journey into ancient flavors.
