AI-Generated Recipes: A Hit or a Miss?

AI-created recipes can be a hit or a miss. For example, Dodo Pizza in Dubai tried using ChatGPT to create a unique pizza recipe that combined various cultural ingredients like shawarma chicken and grilled paneer cheese.

This pizza was a success and remains popular. However, other AI-generated ideas, like a pizza with strawberries and breakfast cereal, were not put on sale.

In Dallas, Velvet Taco used ChatGPT to create taco recipes, leading to a successful combination of prawns and steak that sold 22,000 units in a week.

Velvet Taco’s culinary director, Venecia Willis, believes AI can help spark creative ideas but shouldn’t be used exclusively for recipe creation. Human input is still essential to ensure the recipes work well.

Not everyone is enthusiastic about AI in the food industry. Some, like London cocktail creator Julian de Feral, find AI-generated recipes lacking common sense.

Linguistics professor Emily Bender points out that AI learns from existing recipes online and may not produce truly original ideas. She also notes that sophisticated future AI could potentially be more useful by understanding flavor profiles better.

Meanwhile, UK supermarket chain Waitrose uses AI to identify food trends from social media, such as “smash burgers” and “crookies,” and adapts its products accordingly.

In Singapore, Stefano Cantù developed an app called “ChefGPT” to suggest recipes based on available ingredients, which has gained popularity but comes with costs for using AI technology.

Overall, while AI can provide creative inspirations and help spot trends, it’s seen as a tool rather than a replacement for human creativity in recipe development.
