The Ghana Supreme Court has started listening to a challenge against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill that Ghana’s parliament passed in February.
A lawyer and journalist named Richard Dela Sky asked the court to review this bill. The bill says that being gay could lead to three years in jail, and supporting LGBTQ+ rights could mean five to 10 years in jail.
Another person, Dr. Amanda Odoi, also brought a case against the bill, saying it goes against the country’s constitution.
The first day of the court hearing was tense, with strong arguments between lawyers and the chief justice. The chief justice was worried about the language used in some statements.
This case is significant because it has drawn a lot of attention from both Ghanaians and international groups.
President Akufo Addo said he’ll wait for the Supreme Court’s decision before deciding on the bill. The court will continue the case on May 17.
