Former Olympic athlete Helen Smart, who took part in the 2000 Olympics, has passed away at the age of 43.

Helen Smart, previously known as Helen Don-Duncan, represented Great Britain as a swimmer in the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.

Her death was announced by the Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School in Wigan, England, where she worked as the head teacher before her sudden passing. The exact cause of her death has not been revealed.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that our much-loved Headteacher, Mrs. Helen Smart, has passed away unexpectedly. The Chair of Governors, Alison Halliwell, has conveyed our heartfelt sympathies to Helen’s family during this challenging period.”

“I have news that might surprise and make our community very sad,” Halliwell’s message went on. “I want to let you know that the leaders of Worsley Mesnes School are teaming up with the local government and the school itself to make sure that our kids, teachers, and parents get the help they need in the next few weeks.”

“We will share more details and updates when we have them,” the message finished.

Helen Smart’s husband, Craig Smart, and their two young children, Heidi and Stanley, are left behind after her passing. On the school’s Facebook post, Craig expressed gratitude for the kind words from the community. He mentioned how much Helen cherished the school, its staff, the kids, and the parents. Becoming the Head Teacher was a proud achievement for her, and she always said she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. She truly embodied the spirit of Worsley Mesnes.

In his message, Craig also encouraged everyone to continue learning and living without regrets. He advised people to take many photos, create lasting memories, and always have a smile on their faces, just as Helen did. He signed off with love.
