Japanese Navy Crewman Killed, Seven Missing in Pacific Helicopter Crash

During a nighttime training exercise near the Izu Islands, two Japanese Navy helicopters crashed into the Pacific Ocean. One crew member has been confirmed dead, while seven others are still missing.

The helicopters, Mitsubishi SH-60Ks, were conducting anti-submarine drills when communication was lost with one of them off the island of Torishima.

An emergency signal was received shortly after, followed by the loss of communication with the second helicopter in the same area.

While the cause of the accident remains unknown, Defense Minister Minoru Kihara emphasized the priority of saving lives.

The incident occurred far from other vessels or aircraft, making outside involvement unlikely.

This tragedy adds to Japan’s recent history of military aircraft accidents. In April 2023, a Japanese army helicopter crashed off Miyako Island, resulting in the loss of all 10 people on board, including a senior commander.

The Japanese government has been increasing defense spending and strengthening partnerships in response to rising tensions in the region, particularly with China.

Such incidents underscore the risks and challenges faced by military personnel during training and operations.
