Kenya is investigating a helicopter crash that killed the military chief, Gen. Francis Ogolla, and nine others. The cause of the crash isn’t clear yet.

It happened shortly after takeoff in the northwest part of the country. The bodies of the victims were taken to Nairobi, and two survivors are in the hospital.

President William Ruto declared three days of mourning for the nation. Gen. Ogolla, a respected officer, had been in the military for nearly 40 years.

His death has raised questions about the safety of military aircraft, especially since this is the fifth such accident in a year.

Maintenance issues and concerns about how military funds are used are being highlighted. The incident underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in military spending.

This analysis comes from BBC Africa’s security correspondent, Ian Wafula, who points out the challenges the military faces in maintaining its aircraft.
