A guy from Uganda got everyone excited about a new currency for East Africa by posting pictures of fake money on social media.

He made up a name for the currency, “sheafras,” combining the names of two real currencies from the region. People thought it was real because his social media account looked official.

But the East African Community, a group of eight countries in the region, said it wasn’t true. This guy, Moses Haabwa, said he just wanted to give people hope.

He runs a company but also claims to be part of a made-up government. He thinks the real East African leaders aren’t moving fast enough to make a single currency, so he took matters into his own hands.

The BBC wrote about this whole thing, and they’re still trying to figure out why social media gave his account a special verification mark.
