The people in charge of elections in Liberia decided that there will be another vote for president in November. This is because the two main candidates, President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai, did not get enough votes in the first round.

Weah got a bit more votes with 43.83%, while Boakai got 43.44%. This information comes from all the polling places in the country.

The person in charge of the commission, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, said the second vote will happen on November 14. She also mentioned that a lot of people came out to vote – almost 79% of the 2.4 million people who could vote did so.

The election on October 10 was an important test for former soccer star Weah, who is now 57 years old. In his first term, he was criticized by the opposition and other countries for not doing enough to fight corruption.

During his campaign, he asked people to give him more time to keep his promise of fixing the country’s economy, institutions, and buildings. He said he would build more roads if he gets reelected.

Liberia is having a hard time recovering from two wars that happened between 1989 and 2003, which caused the death of over 250,000 people. They are also still trying to get back on their feet after the Ebola epidemic from 2013 to 2016, which killed thousands of people.

Boakai, who is 78 years old, was Weah’s main opponent. He said that Liberia needed saving from what he believed was poor management by Weah’s government.
