US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has promised unwavering support for Israel in its fight against what he described as a Hamas “reign of terror”.
US Secretary of State Blinken talked to Israel’s PM Netanyahu about the recent attack from Gaza. He assured Israel that they will always have support. He also asked Israel to be careful not to hurt innocent people in the fighting.
More than 1,300 Israelis and over 1,400 Palestinians have lost their lives in the air strikes on Gaza. In Israel, 27 Americans have been confirmed dead, and 14 are still missing, believed to be taken against their will.
The group Hamas, seen as a terrorist organization by the US and EU, held about 150 people hostage during their attack on Gaza over the weekend. This attack was the deadliest by Palestinian militants in Israel’s 75-year history.
The top American diplomat met with Mr. Netanyahu in Tel Aviv. Mr. Blinken assured Israel of strong US support, saying they will always stand by them. He emphasized the need to be very careful not to harm innocent people in the ongoing conflict.
Mr. Blinken expressed sorrow for every innocent life lost and condemned the terrible attacks by Hamas. Mr. Netanyahu appreciated the visit, seeing it as a clear sign of America’s unwavering support for Israel.
President Biden also stressed that Israel must follow the rules of war in their response to Hamas. He believes Israel has a responsibility to react to such a terrible act.
Israel has imposed a complete blockade on Gaza, including essential supplies, until the hostages are released. They are determined to defeat Hamas and have launched a bombing campaign on the area where over 2 million people live.
According to a US official, there are around 600 Americans in Gaza, some of whom want to leave. Aid organizations are asking for safe routes to be established to help the suffering civilians in Gaza.
