Israeli forces say they hit a Hezbollah post in Lebanon, while the armed group says it launched rockets at three Israeli posts.
Israel and the group Hezbollah from Lebanon have fought, which could lead to a bigger conflict in the region. This happened after a surprising attack by Hamas in southern Israel that sadly caused the loss of over 250 lives. In response, Israel has carried out intense bombings in the Gaza area, where more than 300 Palestinians have lost their lives. The people in Gaza have been facing restrictions from Israel on land, sea, and air since 2007.
Hamas and other groups in Palestine have been asking for the restrictions to stop. They’ve also been organizing protests near the fence that separates their territory from Israel.
Hezbollah, a strong armed group supported by Iran, said they fired guided rockets and artillery at three places in Shebaa Farms to show support for the Palestinian people. Shebaa Farms, which Lebanon claims, was taken by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.
Hezbollah stated, “In support of the Palestinian resistance and the strong Palestinian people, a group from the Islamic Resistance attacked three Israeli sites in Shebaa Farms on Sunday, October 8, 2023, to work towards freeing the rest of our occupied land in Lebanon.” This statement is in honor of their late commander Hajj Imad Moghniyeh.
On Sunday, the Israeli military reported that it used artillery to strike an area in Lebanon from where mortar fire was sent across the border. They also mentioned that one of their drones hit a Hezbollah post in Har Dov, which is part of Shebaa Farms.
Israel explained that they are currently responding with artillery to the area in Lebanon where the shooting into Israel happened a few minutes ago. They stated that they are ready for any situation and will keep ensuring the safety of the people in Israel.
Since 1967, Tel Aviv has controlled Shebaa Farms, a piece of land spanning 39 square kilometers (15 square miles). However, both Syria and Lebanon argue that Shebaa Farms belong to Lebanon.
The United Nations group keeping peace in southern Lebanon didn’t reply right away when Reuters news agency asked for a comment.
On Saturday, the United Nations group mentioned they increased their presence in southern Lebanon due to recent events in Israel and Gaza.
Hezbollah, the powerful group in charge of southern Lebanon, stated on Saturday that they were talking directly with leaders of Palestinian “resistance” groups. They believe the Palestinian attacks on Israel are a strong reply to Israel’s ongoing control and a message to those trying to make things normal with Israel.
