French rapper MHD was sentenced to 12 years for the 2018 Paris murder.
A court in Paris found 29-year-old French rapper MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, guilty of being involved in a gang-related killing of a 23-year-old named Loic K.
The victim was hit by MHD’s car, then attacked and stabbed to death by about 12 people.
MHD, known for mixing trap and West African music into ‘Afro trap’, said he didn’t do it and pleaded not guilty. He claimed he wasn’t there and that people were just spreading rumors about him.
But someone who lived nearby recorded the incident from their window in the summer of 2018, and they recognized MHD’s car. Other people also identified him by his haircut and a sweater.
Five of MHD’s friends who were involved got prison sentences from 10 to 18 years. Three others were declared innocent.
We don’t know yet if the people who got sentenced are going to try to change the court’s decision.
Before MHD became a famous rapper, he used to deliver pizzas in Paris. He talked to the BBC five years ago about how he came up with the idea of ‘Afro trap’.
