Huawei Launches New Laptops with Its Own Operating System — A Big Step Against U.S. Tech Pressure | Reuters Report
Chinese tech giant Huawei has just launched two new laptops — the MateBook Fold and MateBook Pro — both powered by its own software called HarmonyOS 5, according to Reuters. This marks a major move by Huawei to challenge U.S. tech giants like Microsoft and Apple, whose Windows and macOS have dominated computers for decades.

As Reuters explains, these are the first laptops Huawei is selling with its own Harmony operating system instead of relying on U.S. software. The MateBook Fold, which opens up into an 18-inch double screen without a physical keyboard, will cost around 23,999 yuan ($3,328). The more traditional MateBook Pro, with a regular keyboard, starts at 7,999 yuan.

Huawei has been under U.S. restrictions since 2019. The U.S. government is worried about national security and has blocked Huawei from using American technology, including important computer chips from companies like Intel and Qualcomm. Reuters says Huawei’s laptop system already supports over 150 apps, including WPS Office, which is an alternative to Microsoft Office, and the popular photo editor Meitu Xiu Xiu.

Interestingly, Huawei didn’t say which chip powers the new laptops. Reuters notes that last year, the U.S. cancelled licenses that let Intel and Qualcomm sell chips to Huawei. That’s likely why the new models are more expensive — Huawei is now using new and costly technology to build its own chips.
