US Joins G7 in Warning Russia to Accept Ukraine Ceasefire or Face More Sanctions, Says Reuters
The United States is now more in sync with its G7 allies when it comes to Ukraine, according to Reuters. After some disagreements, the G7 leaders—including the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union—came together to support Ukraine’s right to keep its land and warned Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face tougher penalties.
Reuters reports that the US under Donald Trump had been unclear on whether Ukraine should keep all its territory. But at this G7 meeting in Canada, the US surprisingly agreed with its allies, sending a strong message to Moscow. Diplomats told Reuters they were unsure if the White House was fully on board, but they were happy the US backed the statement for now.
G7 leaders warned Russia that if it does not follow Ukraine in agreeing to a ceasefire, new sanctions—including restrictions on Russian oil prices—could be introduced. According to Reuters, the final statement also emphasized that Ukraine must have strong security protections to defend itself if Russia tries to attack again.
The meeting wasn’t just about Ukraine. Reuters highlights that the G7 also took a tough stance on China, particularly regarding Taiwan. Unlike past statements, this one did not include reassurances about the “One China” policy, which could upset Beijing.
The Middle East was another sensitive topic. Reuters notes that the US resisted adding strong support for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. In the end, the final G7 statement avoided mentioning a two-state solution and instead used vague wording about a “political horizon” for Palestinians.
Canada played a key role in pushing for action against Russia’s “shadow fleet”—a secretive shipping network that helps Moscow bypass sanctions. Reuters reports that the G7 finally agreed to a new task force to crack down on these illegal shipments.
With Trump in office, the US position on global issues has been unpredictable. As Reuters points out, while this G7 meeting showed temporary unity, many diplomats still wonder how long the US will stay aligned with its allies, especially regarding Ukraine and Russia.
