Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey is making an unusual move by trying to top the Christmas music charts.
After spending the summer campaigning for No. 10 Downing Street, he’s now aiming for No. 1 with a charity single called Love is Enough, sung with the Bath Philharmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir.
According to BBC, the song, written by young carers, highlights the deep love and connection they share with those they care for.
Proceeds from the single will support the Carers Trust and Bath Philharmonia. Sir Ed, who cared for his terminally ill mother as a teenager, shared how the song’s opening line, “Every second we have left is worth a thousand others,” resonated with him emotionally. He hopes it will inspire carers everywhere, as he told BBC.
Jason Thornton, the choir’s music director, explained to BBC that the song’s message is about love being everywhere, even if it’s often taken for granted.
While Sir Ed lends his voice to parts of the track, the choir handles most of the singing, ensuring the spotlight stays on the young carers.
The Lib Dem leader faces tough competition from big names like Mariah Carey and Ed Sheeran, along with charity singles by groups such as The Celebs and Reverend and The Makers.
BBC reports that Sir Ed’s efforts follow a tradition of choirs achieving Christmas chart success, such as St. Winifred’s School Choir in 1980 and the NHS Choir in 2015.
However, streaming services now dominate the charts, and classic hits like Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas Is You often rack up millions of streams, making it harder for new songs to climb to the top.
Sir Ed’s chart challenge reflects his creative campaign style, which included stunts like paddle-boarding and a bungee jump during the general election, as BBC pointed out.
Whether or not he achieves his musical goal, his charity single is sure to touch hearts and support a worthy cause this festive season.
