At Kamala Harris’s event in Washington, D.C., Democratic supporters are anxiously watching the election results, as Trump appears to be taking the lead, BBC reports.

The election isn’t over yet, but Trump’s progress looks similar to his winning campaign in 2016 rather than his loss in 2020. Across the U.S., in areas that have already reported votes, Trump is gaining slightly in some key counties.

So far, Trump has been projected to win North Carolina and Georgia—two of the seven crucial battleground states.

According to BBC, he won these states with strong support from rural areas. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is doing well in urban and suburban areas, matching Biden’s past support in these regions, but it hasn’t been enough to fully close the gap with Trump.

The path for Harris to win in the Sun Belt region, which includes states like North Carolina and Georgia, seems to be closing.

Trump not only kept North Carolina, a state he won in 2020, but also flipped Georgia, which he narrowly lost four years ago.

Now, attention is shifting to the “Blue Wall” states around the Great Lakes, where Harris needs strong support in urban and suburban areas, but so far, her results aren’t meeting Democratic hopes, BBC reports.

Harris’s team is holding out hope for a win in these Great Lakes states, but the full counts from big cities might take days to complete.

BBC reports that in many close elections, key states often lean towards one candidate in the end. Right now, the trend is favoring Trump and other top Republican Senate candidates.

At Trump’s election party in Mar-a-Lago, supporters are celebrating, while at Howard University, where Harris’s supporters have gathered, people are tense, says BBC. If these voting trends stay the same, Trump could soon be back as president.

An early exit poll gives some insight into voting patterns. Unsurprisingly, more women are voting for Harris, and more men are supporting Trump.

But fewer women are backing Harris compared to Biden in 2020, which could be a concern for Democrats. BBC adds that while exit polls are just a rough guide, losing women voters would be troubling for Harris’s campaign.

Overall, this election has seen very high voter turnout, possibly even higher than the record 65.9% turnout in 2020, according to BBC.

Both Trump and Harris have emphasized the importance of this election, and American voters seem to agree.
