Israel has begun a ground invasion in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah in what it calls “limited and targeted” raids. They are warning Lebanese civilians to avoid traveling south and telling residents in about 25 villages to evacuate north.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say their operation aims at Hezbollah’s infrastructure, which they believe threatens communities in northern Israel.
Despite claims of the invasion, Hezbollah denies that Israeli troops are in Lebanon. They assert their fighters are ready for confrontation, but there haven’t been direct clashes yet. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes are ongoing in Lebanon, with casualties rising.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, called the situation one of the most dangerous in the country’s history, with around one million people displaced due to the conflict.
As Israel prepares for further military actions, including possible assaults on Hezbollah’s strongholds, the United States and the European Union are advocating for a ceasefire, emphasizing the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis.
This escalation follows previous hostilities that had flared up since the unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
According to the BBC, both the Israeli military and Hamas have confirmed the deaths of key figures during the ongoing strikes, showing that the violence has significant implications for both sides.
