Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, known for his blunt honesty, now finds himself facing impeachment. He believes his troubles are a result of his straightforward approach to politics, which he calls being a “truthful man.” Before becoming a prominent figure, Gachagua was relatively unknown outside his constituency until he opposed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s preferred candidate during the 2022 elections.
Gachagua gained attention for his fierce criticism of Kenyatta, especially when he aligned with William Ruto, Kenyatta’s deputy, who was aiming for the presidency. His bold remarks often caught the public’s eye, including a statement at a rally where he warned Kenyatta not to repeat historical violence. After Gachagua and Ruto took power, corruption charges against him were dropped.
His rise was surprising; few expected him to become Deputy President since he was a relatively new politician. However, Ruto appreciated Gachagua’s passion for the ordinary people, which helped him mobilize support in Mount Kenya, a key voting area.
Now, just two years into his term, Gachagua’s outspokenness has led to conflict with the president, resulting in impeachment talks due to accusations of corruption and misconduct. Many lawmakers are pushing for his removal, with reports indicating that 291 out of 349 MPs support the motion.
Despite being criticized for his brash style, Gachagua defends his approach, claiming he simply speaks the truth. He identifies as a child of Mau Mau freedom fighters, portraying himself as a voice for the people of central Kenya. However, his support for his region has led to accusations of tribalism.
Gachagua’s past includes a long career in public service before entering politics. He worked closely with Kenyatta and gained wealth through business ventures. While he was elected to the Mathira constituency seat in 2017, his fiery rhetoric has sometimes been controversial, leading to increased ethnic tensions.
In summary, Gachagua’s straightforwardness, which helped him rise politically, may now be what threatens his position. His situation highlights the complex nature of politics in Kenya, where honesty can be both a strength and a vulnerability
