New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing serious federal criminal charges, as reported by the BBC’s US partner, CBS News. Adams, who was elected almost three years ago to help reduce crime in the city, is now under investigation along with several top officials in his team.

These investigations are part of federal corruption probes. According to the BBC, the charges against Adams are still sealed, but if he’s convicted, he would be the first mayor in New York City’s history to be charged while still in office.

In a video statement, Adams denied the charges and promised to fight them. He asked New Yorkers for “prayers and patience” and said he is innocent.

According to the BBC, Adams also said he wants a fast trial so people can hear the truth. He acknowledged that some people may think he should resign, but he strongly believes he can manage the city and fight the case at the same time.

The BBC reports that the charges against Adams are expected to be revealed soon when he appears in court. These charges come after federal agents seized his electronic devices and searched the home of Brianna Suggs, his top fundraiser.

Investigators are looking into whether Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign illegally received donations from foreign governments, including Turkey. Prosecutors are also investigating connections to other countries like Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan, as reported by the BBC.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a well-known figure, has already called for Adams to resign, saying he cannot continue to lead the city while facing these serious accusations. She mentioned that many key officials in the city government have either resigned or been caught up in these investigations, which is hurting the city’s ability to function, according to the BBC.

Several other people close to Adams, including his brother Phil Banks, who is a deputy mayor, and his fiancée Sheena Wright, are also being investigated.

David Banks, the schools chancellor and another close associate of Adams, recently announced he would step down at the end of the year, the BBC says. Prosecutors are also looking into bribery allegations involving city contracts.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a close ally of Adams, hasn’t commented on the charges yet. If Adams is removed from office, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would step in as the acting mayor, according to the BBC.

Adams is also facing growing pressure from other Democrats as he prepares for re-election next year.
