Donald Trump gave a big economic speech in Savannah, Georgia, promising to bring jobs from other countries back to the U.S. and help American factories.

He said if he returns to the White House, he will cut taxes, lower energy costs, and reduce rules for companies that make things in the U.S.

This is part of his plan to strengthen the country’s manufacturing sector. Trump also repeated his idea to punish American companies that make goods outside the U.S. by placing large taxes (tariffs) on foreign products, trying to protect American workers.

According to BBC, Trump’s proposals could cause trade conflicts with other countries, which may make imported products more expensive for Americans.

At the same time, Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump are both focused on the economy, as many Americans say it’s their biggest concern for the 2024 election, BBC has explained. Harris is expected to introduce new economic plans in Pittsburgh soon.

A key difference in their plans is that Trump is talking about making other countries fear losing their jobs to the U.S., while Harris is focused on helping families and first-time home buyers, BBC pointed out.

Trump suggested creating “special federal zones” with very low taxes to attract companies back to the U.S., and appointing a “manufacturing ambassador” to convince international businesses to move. BBC said that Trump has also previously talked about high tariffs on Chinese products, which some experts say could raise costs for American consumers.

According to BBC, Trump has blamed the Democrats for inflation, which went up during the COVID pandemic but has since cooled down. However, food prices have still risen by 25% from 2019 to 2023, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. BBC’s analysis of polls shows that more voters trust Trump over Harris when it comes to the economy. Still, Harris has made some progress in convincing voters she’s capable, especially since August.

Trump’s speech in Georgia happened after a poll showed him slightly ahead in key battleground states like Georgia, Arizona, and North Carolina, according to BBC. Both Harris and Trump are spending a lot of time in Georgia because it’s a crucial state for winning the election.

Although Trump’s speech was supposed to be about the economy, he talked about other things too, including an alleged assassination attempt on his life. He also attacked Harris, calling her “incompetent” and saying she would ruin American industry if elected.

BBC added that the Harris campaign responded by criticizing Trump’s ideas, with investor Mark Cuban saying Trump’s tariffs would hurt American businesses.

Harris is planning to visit Pennsylvania to talk about her economic ideas. She’s already proposed tax breaks for families and first-time homebuyers, and wants to stop unfairly high grocery prices.

BBC highlighted Harris’ plan to provide a tax credit for builders of affordable homes for first-time buyers, and to give up to $25,000 to help first-time buyers with down payments, focusing on addressing everyday challenges Americans face.
