Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has strongly condemned the killing of Mohamed Ali Kibao, a senior leader of the opposition party Chadema.
According to a report from BBC, Mr. Kibao was kidnapped, beaten, and had acid poured on his face. He was taken off a bus by people believed to be security agents while traveling from Dar es Salaam to Tanga.
This tragic event has caused widespread anger, especially among opposition groups and human rights organizations. President Samia emphasized that Tanzania is a democracy where everyone has the right to live. She has ordered a detailed investigation into this terrible crime, as reported by BBC.
At Mr. Kibao’s funeral, many people were upset and called for the Home Affairs Minister, Hamad Masauni, to resign. BBC noted that US officials are also urging a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.
Concerns are rising that the country might be sliding back into repression, similar to what was seen during the rule of the late President John Magufuli.
