Federal Authorities Raid Homes of New York Police Commissioner and Top Officials
Federal agents have searched the home of New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban. The NYPD confirmed the investigation by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York but did not provide details on the reason behind the raids, according to BBC News.
Homes of other high-ranking officials appointed by Mayor Eric Adams were also raided on Thursday. This includes First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III. The FBI is reported to have been involved in some of these searches.
As of Thursday evening, there hasn’t been an official explanation for why these raids occurred. However, sources mentioned to CBS News that the investigations might be related to electronic devices from NYPD executives. It is reported that phones belonging to Wright and Banks were taken during the raids.
Caban, who has been NYPD Commissioner since 2023 and is the city’s first Latino in this role, is a close ally of Mayor Adams. Wright lives with David Banks, the city’s school chancellor and the brother of Philip Banks, another official whose home was searched.
Philip Banks, a former NYPD chief, has had legal troubles before. Federal prosecutors once named him as a co-conspirator in a bribery scheme, although he was never charged.
Mayor Adams himself has faced scrutiny. Last year, the FBI raided the home of his chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, in connection with an investigation into whether his campaign received illegal foreign contributions. Adams has stated he is cooperating with investigations and has not been accused of any wrongdoing, as reported by BBC News.
