Multiple cars in a motorcade carrying Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate for vice president, crashed in Milwaukee, but thankfully, Walz was not hurt. According to BBC, the crash happened around 1:00 PM local time on Monday.
The cars involved were at the back of the motorcade and were carrying press members traveling with Walz. Reporters said they were “violently thrown forward” after being hit from behind, which caused their vehicle to collide with the car in front.
At least one person was injured, with BBC noting that someone may have broken an arm.
The cause of the crash, which took place on Interstate 794, is still unknown, BBC reports. Vice President Kamala Harris called Walz to check on him, and President Joe Biden also reached out.
BBC says Walz addressed the incident during a Labor Day event in Milwaukee, expressing relief that, despite a few minor injuries, everyone would be okay. He thanked the Secret Service and first responders for their quick actions, BBC highlights.
This isn’t the first motorcade accident during the campaign, BBC adds, mentioning that just last week, a Georgia policeman crashed his motorcycle while accompanying the campaign convoy, sustaining serious injuries.
BBC explains that motorcade vehicles are often driven by campaign staff who may not have professional driving experience, adding to the risks on the road.
