Mario & Sonic at the Olympics: Is It Over?
The Olympic Games are known for their grand ceremonies and exciting competitions. But this time, many are asking why Mario and Sonic, the beloved video game characters, are missing from the action.
Since their first collaboration in 2008, Mario and Sonic have starred in a series of games that brought together these two iconic characters for Olympic events. Their latest game took place in Japan, but there’s no new game for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Lee Cocker, who worked on the series for 17 years, revealed that the Olympic Committee decided to partner with a different company this time.
The new game is made by nWay, a smaller developer, and focuses on mobile platforms. This move, which also includes exploring NFTs and esports, has disappointed many fans.
Cocker’s post about the missing game received a huge response from fans who grew up with these games. Despite the disappointment, Cocker reflects fondly on the series and imagines how fun it would have been to see Mario and Sonic in new events like breakdancing.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) explained that the delay from the Tokyo 2020 Games contributed to the lack of a new Mario and Sonic game.
While it’s unclear if the characters will return in the future, the legacy of the series remains special for many fans.
