Warrant Issued for Liberia’s Ex-Finance Minister Over $500 Million Scandal
Liberia’s former finance minister, Samuel Tweh, faces an arrest warrant after being accused of involvement in a $500 million corruption scandal. Along with four other top officials from former President George Weah’s administration, Tweh is charged with stealing from the government.
Tweh, previously sanctioned by the US for corruption, calls the charges a “politically motivated witch-hunt.” He and other former officials are accused of economic sabotage and illegal use of public funds.
Three of the indicted officials are in jail because they couldn’t pay bail, while Tweh and another official, Stanley Ford, are still at large. The new President, Joseph Boakai, who took office in January, has promised to crack down on corruption and has already started audits and strengthened anti-corruption agencies.
