Burkina Faso’s military leaders have banned homosexual acts, marking a significant shift in the country’s stance despite no previous laws against same-sex relations.

The junta, which seized power in 2022 and has turned towards Russia, plans to criminalize such acts under new legislation yet to be fully detailed and approved.

This move is part of broader reforms under junta leader Ibrahim Traoré, who ousted his predecessor over security concerns.

Burkina Faso joins other African nations tightening restrictions on LGBTQ rights, a trend drawing international criticism but reflecting local social and religious norms.
