A Moscow court has issued an arrest warrant for Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, accusing her of extremism.
Yulia, who lives outside Russia, is charged with “participation in an extremist society,” according to state media.
Alexei Navalny, a key opposition figure, died in a Russian jail in February. While authorities claimed natural causes, Yulia accused President Vladimir Putin of torturing and killing her husband.
Navalny had been serving a 19-year sentence for extremism, which many believed were politically motivated.
Yulia Navalnaya, responding to the arrest warrant, stated on X that Putin is a murderer and a war criminal who should be imprisoned in Russia.
The court ruled that she should be remanded in custody, meaning she would be arrested if she returned to Russia.
The charges against Yulia might be related to a 2021 court ruling that banned three of Navalny’s organizations as extremist.
Yulia, who couldn’t attend her husband’s funeral, has since met several Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden.
Recently, she was elected chair of the US-based Human Rights Foundation and vowed to continue her husband’s fight against Putin.
