Understanding COVID Tongue: What It Is, Symptoms, and How Long It Lasts
In the early days of COVID-19, we were discovering new things about the virus almost daily. It became clear that besides its severity, it could also cause temporary loss of taste and smell, which was particularly concerning for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
Now, as COVID-19 shifts from pandemic to endemic status, it’s crucial to stay informed about its various manifestations. One of these is known colloquially as “COVID tongue,” although it’s not an official diagnosis.
This condition, scientifically termed glossitis, can occur when the virus attacks and damages taste buds temporarily.
Symptoms of COVID tongue include discomfort, burning sensations, swelling, redness, changes in taste, ulcers, and a white coating on the tongue.
These symptoms can resemble other oral issues, so it’s essential to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis.
While COVID tongue isn’t the most common symptom of the virus, studies have shown that a significant number of people have experienced oral symptoms related to COVID-19.
These can range from mild to more severe conditions, requiring medical attention if symptoms like severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems occur.
Treatment for COVID tongue remains largely supportive, focusing on managing symptoms with vitamins, oral rinses, and sometimes topical steroids. Fortunately, this condition typically resolves on its own within days to weeks.
The best defense against COVID tongue and severe COVID-19 symptoms, in general, is vaccination. Getting vaccinated significantly reduces the risk of experiencing severe illness and helps protect against various symptoms associated with the virus.
