Claudia Sheinbaum has made history as Mexico’s first woman president after a decisive victory, securing 58-60% of the vote.
She will take office on October 1, succeeding her mentor, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Sheinbaum, formerly the mayor of Mexico City and a renowned scientist, promises to continue López Obrador’s policies.
Her opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, criticized the government’s handling of violence, which marred the campaign with over 20 local candidates killed.
Sheinbaum’s supporters, celebrating in Mexico City’s main square, back her focus on poverty alleviation.
This election marks a significant step for women’s political leadership in Mexico.
